A state appellate court has denied a request for a new trial from a man convicted of assaulting a police officer in Texarkana.
Fifty-year-old Jeffery Dale Troxel was sentenced last year to life in prison plus 50 years after a Bowie County jury found him guilty of assaulting an officer and unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Troxel appealed, arguing prosecutors made improper statements during closing arguments. However, the Sixth District Court of Appeals ruled the issue was not preserved for review because no objection was made during the trial.
According to court records, Troxel attacked a Texarkana police sergeant during a January 2025 encounter, striking him and attempting to grab his service weapon. Officers later found a handgun in Troxel’s waistband.
The court’s decision leaves his sentence in place.
