TXDOT Launches Pedestrian Safety Campaign In Texarkana

The Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, especially during the rainy season. As part of its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign, TXDOT has sent teams of walking billboards to Texarkana and other busy areas across the state to promote pedestrian safety.

Officials say wet roads and low visibility increase the risk of accidents. Heather Deaton with TXDOT’s Atlanta District says eight pedestrians lost their lives in Northeast Texas last year—deaths she says were preventable.

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and Deaton says it’s the deadliest month for pedestrians statewide. Meanwhile, the City of Texarkana, Texas has passed a new ordinance creating 200-foot “street safety zones” around intersections, which will be gradually enforced over the next 30 days.
