Three people were killed in a series of crashes early Monday on Interstate 30 in Hempstead County.
Arkansas State Police say the first crash happened around 1 a.m., spilling oil and tar onto the road. A contractor with the Arkansas Department of Transportation, 44-year-old Jonathan Gary Williams of Sherwood, was struck and killed while placing reflectors in the roadway. The driver of the car that hit him fled the scene on foot and hasn’t been found.
A second crash at 2:15 a.m. near mile marker 19 caused only minor injuries.
Then around 3:36 a.m., a third crash near the 20-mile marker involved three 18-wheelers and a pickup truck. Two passengers in the pickup—25-year-old Jonathan Garcia and 61-year-old Javier Rivera, both of Hope—were killed. Two others were seriously injured.
Part of I-30 westbound was closed for several hours. ASP is still investigating and urges caution in work zones.
