Texarkana, Arkansas, Moves Forward With Millwood Lake Water Sale Proposal

The Texarkana, Arkansas, Board of Directors has approved the next step toward a potential water sale through the Millwood Lake Water Supply Project.

The Texarkana, Arkansas, Board of Directors has approved the next step toward a potential water sale through the Millwood Lake Water Supply Project.

The October 13 vote authorizes an exclusivity agreement with Heartland Water Partners and the Southwest Arkansas Water District, along with an application to transfer water outside the state.

City Manager Tyler Richards says a future sale could generate between 16 and 20 million dollars annually, helping control water rates and fund infrastructure improvements. He says the city would still have more than enough water to meet future demand.

The proposal has drawn mixed reactions from residents. A final sale has not been approved. The city plans to submit its application by the end of October, with state lawmakers expected to consider the proposal next year.
