Just three weeks before school starts, the City of Hooks has voted not to renew its police protection contract with Hooks ISD.

The decision, made July 21, was supported by Police Chief Johnny Millwood, Mayor Marc Reiter, and council members Gary Wright, Rhett Tuggle, and Jeff Parker. The move leaves the school district scrambling to arrange security before the new school year begins.

Hooks ISD declined to comment on the situation.

Less than 24 hours after the vote, during a budget meeting, Chief Millwood proposed using the money saved from pulling police from schools to hire a personal secretary.

Community members have expressed frustration over the decision, voicing concerns about student safety and the city’s priorities.
