She and others fear the cuts could force hospitals to close, leading to increased maternal deaths and higher infant mortality rates. Pearl McElfish from UAMS adds that the state’s healthcare system is already underfunded and these cuts would put lives at risk.
Senator Tom Cotton downplayed the concerns, calling the cuts a benefit for taxpayers. But Dr. Miers strongly disagrees, noting that nearly half of Arkansas children depend on Medicaid for care.
